The use of woody plant collections of the botanical gardens in Košice and Nyíregyháza in the upbringing and education of children and adults

Project description:
The collection of trees in botanical gardens tends to be extensive and there are often no support activities for its use for education and upbringing of children as well as adults. Such activities are, for example, more detailed labelling of trees with QR code links to websites, various educational trails with interactive sites, supported by sport relaxation activities (various tools for exercise, etc.).

Therefore, the main output of the project The use of woody plant collections of the botanical gardens in Košice and Nyíregyháza in the upbringing and education of children and adults is the creation of a dendrological educative trail. The trail includes several interactive and relaxing sites so that it can be used by the general public and is suitable for visitors of all ages.

The use of modernized and new facilities in both botanical gardens will encourage visitors to search for common and different elements in the flora of Slovakia and Hungary in comparison with the world and will promote mutual awareness of tourism opportunities in the regions.

Project goal

Project goal:
The aim of the project is to develop cooperation between the botanical gardens in Slovakia and Hungary, specifically the Botanical Garden of P. J. Šafárik University in Košice and the Nyiregyhaza Botanical Garden Their common programme concerns the field of education on dendroflora and supportive educational activities for children and adults. The project will support the awareness of both botanical gardens in the region and their cooperation and the possibility to visit the cooperating institution in the partner country. These general objectives can be summarized as follows:

1. Development of cross-border cooperation between the workers of the partner botanical gardens in the both countries

2. Building of a new dendrological educational trail with relaxation activities in Košice and a revitalization of the children's garden in Nyiregyhaza, as well as the labelling of individual trees for educational purposes

3. Subsequent increase in the attendance of the botanical gardens, development of cross-border tourism, an increase in ecological awareness of the importance of woody plants in the times of impending climate change.

Target group

Target group:
The target group using the outputs of the project will be formed by primary and secondary school pupils and students, university students, organized groups from leisure centres, individual visitors as parents with children, seniors, the mentally and physically handicapped as well as marginalized communities.

Botanical Garden of P. J. Šafárik University, Košice:

  • Kick of meeting of the lead partner and partner in the Botanical Garden in Nyíregzháza, 30th July 2020



  • The building of the trail with rest areas and the installation of equipment for outdoor activities



  • Planting of new trees from the partner organization within the building of the trail



  • Designing and installation of descriptive boards (descriptive boards for individual woody plants, entrance and exit boards, 5 educational boards within the dendrological educational trail)



  • Preparation and printing of workbooks and educational material for primary and secondary schools in Slovak language



  • Creating of a website
  • Organizing of one final conference



Botanical Garden, Nyíregyháza:
  • Reconstruction and improvement of the children's garden and enlargement of its content



  • Planting of new trees from the partner organization



  • Designing of descriptive boards and their installation near the concerned trees



  • Organizing of one final workshop
